Tournament Bracket Sizes: Rounds, Matches and Byes

Every bracket size this tool builds, from 4 to 128 teams, with the numbers that decide how long your event runs. Pick a size to open a generator already loaded with that many slots.

A single-elimination bracket for N teams plays N minus 1 matches over ceil(log2 N) rounds. The field is padded up to the next power of two, so the byes are 2^ceil(log2 N) - N, and by convention they go to the top seeds.

Worked from that rule: 16 teams need 4 rounds and 15 matches with no byes; 12 teams need the same 4 rounds but play 11 matches with 4 byes, because a 12-team field sits inside a 16-slot bracket.

Standard 8-team seeded single-elimination bracket. Quarterfinals are 1v8, 4v5, 2v7 and 3v6, which puts seeds 1 and 2 in opposite halves so they can only meet in the final. Diagram drawn from the same slot order the generator uses; every other size follows the same rule at a different depth.

How These Numbers Are Derived

Matches = N - 1

Every match knocks out exactly one team, and only the champion survives, so a field of N always needs N - 1 matches. Byes are not matches, so a 12-team draw is 11 matches even though the bracket has 16 slots.

Rounds = ceil(log2 N)

Each round halves the field. 16 halves to 8, 4, 2, 1 in four steps. A field that is not a power of two rounds up to the next one, which is why 9 through 16 teams all take 4 rounds.

Byes = slots - N

The bracket is padded to 2^ceil(log2 N) slots and the shortfall becomes byes, and they go to the highest seeds. That is the convention in the NFL playoffs, where seven teams per conference qualify and the No. 1 seed in each sits out the Wild Card round, and in the 12-team College Football Playoff, where the four highest-ranked teams skip the first round.

Full workings, including Swiss round counts and the pairing rules, are on the methodology page.

Bracket Size FAQ

How many matches are in a tournament bracket?

A single-elimination bracket always plays one match fewer than the number of teams, because every match eliminates exactly one team and only the champion is never eliminated. 16 teams play 15 matches, 32 teams play 31, and 128 teams play 127. Byes do not change this: a bye is not a match.

How many rounds does a bracket need?

Round count is ceil(log2 N), the number of times you can halve the field before one team is left. 8 teams need 3 rounds, 16 need 4, 32 need 5, 64 need 6 and 128 need 7. Any field size in between rounds up: 10, 12 and 14 teams all need 4 rounds, the same as 16.

How do you work out the number of byes?

Round the field up to the next power of two to get the bracket slots, then subtract the number of teams. 12 teams fit a 16-slot bracket, so there are 4 byes. 24 teams fit a 32-slot bracket, so there are 8 byes. Byes go to the top seeds by convention, so those teams skip Round 1.

Which bracket size should I use?

Use the size that matches your actual entry list. There is no need to pad the field yourself: enter 11 or 23 teams and the generator builds the next power-of-two bracket and assigns the byes for you. The table above shows what each size costs in rounds and matches so you can judge it against the time you have.

Is every bracket size free to generate?

Yes. Every size from 3 to 128 teams is free with no signup, no participant cap and no watermark. The full bracket is encoded in the shareable link, so it reopens for anyone you send it to.
